GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. 55 Both conditions inhibit callus-formation and its properossification, so that after the operation the properly ap-proximated fragments very slowly throw out callus, andthe firm ossification of this new callus may be delayed formonths, even a year, and in some few instances firm bonyunion is never accomplished. Nevertheless, bearing thesepossibilities in mind, we should persistently continue theproper treatment. In the majority of instances a goodresult will be obtained.—Ed.) The formation of a false joint may be due to general orto local causes. Among general causes syphilis, generaldebility, etc., are the most important. Various circum-stances operating at the seat of fracture itself may lead tothe formation of a false joint. Thus, for example, severecontusion at the seat of fracture, such as occurs in gravedirect fractures, especially if they are compound. In other cases a false joint may result in spite of normalor even exaggerated callus-formation, either because of theinterposition of soft parts or marked overriding of thefragments. 56 FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS.
