Originally a northern word, and therefore probably from a zimanên cermeniya bakur source, although the sense-development is unclear; compare Sylt frîsiya bakur Skolp (“dandruff”), norsiya kevn skálpr (“sheath”), swêdiya kevn skalp, holendiya navîn schelpe (“shell”).
