Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki[biguhêre]

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the English language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. Infact, of the 1798 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 10 (ku-arab), 610 (ku-latn) messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages of almost 80 extensions, with about 1050 messages.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator priviledges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on meta and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we would be happy to help you get started.

Thank you very much for your attention and I do hope to see some of you on Betawiki soon! Cheers! Siebrand@Betawiki 17:47, 7 kewçêr 2007 (UTC)

2010 Fundraising Is Almost Here[biguhêre]

Hello Wikimedians, my name is Sam and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between the Kurdî community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort; we recognize that banner messages which may perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribute to this project by helping translate and localize messages into Kurdî and suggesting messages that would appeal to Kurdî readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.
Use the talk pages on meta, talk to your local communities, talk to others, talk to us, and add your feedback to the proposed messages as well! I look forward to working with you during this year's fundraiser. If someone could translate this message I would really appreciate it so that everyone is able to understand our goals and contribute to this year's campaign.

Palmisêl[biguhêre]

Gelî wîkîvanan,

Ji we kes dizane gelo "palmisêl" çi diwate? Ez di çîrokeke ji gel, li gorî min fêhm kirî, nivîskareke/î Colemêrgî hatî nivîsandin leqayî peyvê hatim. Min ji hevalêkî xwe ê Colemêrgî pirsî lê go ez nizanim.

Di hevokê de halo dibûrî: "Di tarîtîyê de lê geriyam, min erdê palmisêl kir, çavên xwe kuskusand..."

Ji kerema xwe hûn karibin arî min bikin. Ger hûn nizanibin ji çavkanînan an kesinan hîn bibin, bi min bidin zanîn.

Spassdar em

Project: Wiktionary meets Matica srpska[biguhêre]

We would like to inform you about the project. This project aims to increase support for Open Knowledge / Free Content movement through establishing long term strategic partnership with the venerable cultural institution Matica srpska and to increase the quality, accuracy and volume of Wiktionaries through digitization of two dictionaries, while developing a potential model for future development of cooperation across Wiktionaries through targeted mobilization of the communities.

There are two activities within the project that we need your support for. First, we are preparing a list of lexicographical terms (it would contain approximately 100 terms) that needs to be translated into as many languages as possible, in order to ensure further work on the project and to create the foundations for other lexicographical projects in the future. For this task, we would use a separate application, but all of the terms would be inserted into Wiktionaries, as well (making approximately 10,000 new entries per Wiktionary, counting that the terminology would be translated into 100 languages). That would also serve as the preparation for translating the Serbian Ornithological dictionary, which is the second activity.

The Serbian ornithological dictionary encompasses all local names of birds living on the Serbian speaking territory. All names are specified under the appropriate Latin name in accordance with the contemporary classification system. This creates the opportunity to translate it easily to various languages, since the basic list of terms is in Latin and it is fairly small (370 species of birds).

We would like to try and motivate as many Wiktionary communities as possible to participate in translating these two dictionaries, especially since the benefit for each particular Wiktionary would be great - for example, if we succeed to motivate people from 100 Wiktionaries to participate, the amount of primary entries to these 100 Wiktionaries would be 3,700,000 (37,000 per Wiktionary). If we succeed to motivate just 20 Wiktionaries, the amount of entries to these 20 Wikitionaries would be 148,000 basic entries. Of course, these entries would be incorporated into the respective Wiktionaries according to the interest and the rules of each community.

With this project, we are opening cooperation with the venerable Serbian cultural institution Matica srpska [2] and we believe that this partnership will have major impact on future cooperation between Wikimedia organizations and similar institutions in Slavic countries. If this cooperation could be relevant to any other partnership you are trying to establish in your country or globally, we would be more than willing to share our knowledge and contacts.

Besides support in translation, we are open for Wikimedia volunteers to participate more substantially and thus build knowledge inside of the community on how to deal with this kind of data. For example, if you are willing to join the core team and help us in communication with the Wiktionary communities of the languages which you are speaking, please contact Milica (milica.gudovic@yahoo.com) or Milos (millosh@gmail.com) via email. The same goes if you are willing to contribute by coding in Python and/or PHP.

Please join us on project's discussion page or send us an e-mail. If you are willing to participate but are not sure in your knowledge of English please check the list of languages organizational team is speaking - there is a chance we can communicate in your native language.

We are very excited about this projects and hope that you will be part of it as well!

Looking forward to hear from you!

A new "Welcome" message[biguhêre]

Hello everyone. Apologies for using English on this page. Please help translate to your language. Spas!

This is a heads-up about a change which was announced in Tech News: Add the "welcome" dialog (with button to switch) to the wikitext editor.

In a nutshell, this will soon provide a one-time "Welcome" message in the wikitext editor which explains that anyone can edit, and every improvement helps. The user can then start editing in the wikitext editor right away, or switch to the visual editor. This is the equivalent of an already existing welcome message for visual editor users, which suggests the option to switch to the wikitext editor. If you have already seen this dialog in the visual editor, you will not see the new one in the wikitext editor. It won't say "Wikipedia" here ;)

  • The current site-wide configuration of the visual editor stays the same.
    • Nothing changes permanently for users who chose to hide the visual editor in their Preferences, or for wikis where it's still a Beta Feature, or for wikis where certain groups of users don't get the visual editor tab, etc.
    • This wiki features a Single Edit Tab system; if you're not sure you know or remember how that works, you can read the guide (which details, among other things, how to switch between editors from the buttons on the toolbar); you can change your editing settings at any time, by the way.
    • There is a slight chance that you see a few more questions than usual about the visual editor. Please refer people to the documentation or to the feedback page, and feel free to ping me if you have questions too! I had also written a very quick intro to the visual editor, in case anyone is interested.
  • Finally, I want to acknowledge that, while not everyone will see that dialog, many of you will; if you're reading this you are likely not the intended recipients of that dialog, so you may be confused or annoyed by it—and if this is the case, I'm truly sorry about that. Please feel free to cross-post this message at other venues on this wiki, if you think it will avoid that other users feel caught by surprise by this change.

If you want to learn more, please see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T133800; if you have feedback or think you need to report a bug with the dialog, you can post in that task (or at mediawiki.org if you prefer).

Thanks for your attention and happy editing, --Elitre (WMF) 15:31, 17 gulan 2016 (UTC) PS: sorry, I can't locate your village pump. Please move this message there![bersiv bide]
